Film Photography
Is film photography making a comeback?
I would say that most photographers nowadays begin their photography journey on a digital camera, but I got my start learning on film. I loved every second of the process. Taking the photos, developing the film, dodging and burning, everything. It’s pretty uncommon now to find dark rooms out there in high schools, but I am so happy that mine did. It may not be known to the students in that class now, but they are SO lucky to have that resource in the palm of their hands.
Now, even though I started on film, I’m a mirrorless girl through and through. I LOVE my Canon R6. It has really changed the game of photography for me. Being able to adjust so quickly and create so easily is something I love.
Recently, though, I’ve been seeing a comeback of film photography - I myself just purchased a film camera for the first time two months ago and have been LOVING it. The film effect is trending. The photos have a timeless look to them, something that digital photographs may sometimes lack. They’re grainy and unedited (most of the time), and the colors are true to life without having to do anything.
There are a lot of photographers out there mimicking the vibe of film photography in their digital photographs, and personally, I’m here for it. Not everyone is able to get their hands on a film camera, and if they do, it’s even harder to find a place to get everything developed. Lucky for me, Saint Louis is home to a fourth-generation camera shop, Schiller’s, that is AMAZING. It’s a resource that most people would die to have near them.
So why is film making a comeback? I think for a photographer, it’s something tangible and different to shoot on compared to an everyday digital camera. I know for me, it’s the surprise of getting your film back and finally seeing all of the photos you shot, just in a different form. They take on a different meaning compared to digital photos. They are timeless in a sense; they give a vibe of something from your childhood, and I think that’s why a lot of people enjoy shooting and seeing film photographs.
